For the record, the correct solution for my situation is to issue the
following commands on all three involved machines:
mkpasswd -L Mach1 -L Mach2 -L Mach3 | grep + > /etc/passwd
mkgroup -L Mach1 -L Mach2 -L Mach3 | grep + > /etc/group
and make sure that "files" is active in nsswitch.conf for passwd and
group.
