Thanks. The $TERM variable says that it is xterm. In the terminal's context menu there is no options for overriding specifc colours, like Putty has.
If you are using xterm, have you tried man xterm? Either that or http://lmgtfy.com/?q=xterm. It's the 3rd entry. (My question is what were you doing for a few minutes on Google such that you didn't think to simply type in xterm!)Is there a general xterm configuration for overriding a specific colour? A few minutes on google didn't uncover anything.
