To be honest, I find that cygcheck too behaves strangely:
~> cygcheck -f /usr/bin/cygcheck
cygwin-1.7.9-1
~> cygcheck -l rebase-3.0.1-1
And starting X, I get strange xauth errors:
xauth: file /home/marc/.serverauth.2060 does not exist
xauth: (stdin):2: unknown command "ac1196cfc1c2dda07dfa426c0520b65c"
Doesn't this look like a spurious newline?
X does start nevertheless.
And .serverauth.2060 is there:
~> ll .serverauth.2060
-rw------- 1 marc None 153 Oct 23 14:05 .serverauth.2060
