I'm a bit late to this thread but I had the same issue and I found a solution
that worked for me and wanted to share it.
Original thread:
http://sourceware.org/ml/cygwin/2009-03/msg00361.html
I already had UseDNS=no, but was still seeing about a 5 second delay after
seeing the "Last login: Tue Jun 23 ..." message.
My solution: verify that the fifth field in the user entry in /etc/passwd
(separating fields with ":") references the correct host name of the machine.
For example, when my machine was first set up the host name was vmdocman and so
the fifth field had:
lincdoc,U-VMDOCMAN\lincdoc,S-1-5-21-329068152-682003330-839522115-1007
This particular machine is a VMware VM and it was copied and renamed to
"eForms-Sales". So when I made the entry like below the logins did not have
the 5 second delay:
lincdoc,U-EFORMS-SALES\lincdoc,S-1-5-21-329068152-682003330-839522115-1007
