Ah, sorry, I couldn't make that out from your last post.

That's pretty badly wrong. Hmmm, it ought to work correctly. Does the
groups command only go wrong after you've manually edited the passwd file,
or does it even go wrong if you just use the generated passwd and groups
files without changing them at all?
