Really should have consulted with the manuall a bit better before posting!
Just saw this in man zshall: BSD_ECHO <S>
Make the echo builtin compatible with the BSD echo(1) command.
This disables backslashed escape sequences in echo strings
unless the -e option is specified.
My bad.. sorry people.. too many looong nights lately ;-)
