You're right. I'm using the latest developers snapshot and the result
is

/home/corinna[103]$ ./y
aaaaaaaaaabbbbbbbbbbccccccccccddddddddddeeeeeeeeeeffffffffffgggggggggghhhhhhhhhh

So the problem is solved in the next Cygwin version.
