I understand. I'm supposed to be the buildmeister for the project, and I
fully accept all responsibility therein. I've also done a bit of homework
and footwork to make sure that I wasn't doing something plainly obvious,
as I know how irritating it is to deal with a complete moron who just asks
questions without doing any investigation. But I'm also sure you know how
hard is to get software engineers to change their ways even in the
slightest (I being one of them!). ;-(

Yep - that did it - that is, providing SHELL= on the make command line.
