Clean up your PATH so that there is only one occurance of each directory. 
Also, move the Cygwin paths to the beginning of PATH and remove any paths you
don't plan to use while using your Cygwin package.  This can be easiest
accomplished by adding an `export
PATH=/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/local/bin:/contrib/bin:[anything-else]' in the
~/.bashrc file.
