If you're ok with that, I'll consider ripping out everything and
starting over - but not for 1.7.2.
So, anyway, no fifo improvements in 1.7.2. Maybe 1.7.3 can be a
fifo-only release.
The other thing that I wanted to do was fix some signal handling problems
but those can wait too.
