Hmm...  I noticed this but I didn't install the gdb into a normal location. 
After I downloaded the tarball and extracted, I tried running ./bin/gdb and the
program simply ended, no warnings, no errors and no screens.  I moved gdb.exe
to /usr/bin and it brought up the windows, however, it still couldn't stat the
file on the tk side.

So, based on what you've said, if I had installed the whole of the gdb package
into the normal locations it wouldn't have worked.  Also, I tried building from
source and running gdb from the build directory, the same "non-start" happened
and after moving to /usr/bin it opened the tk windows.
