Um, since you give me the option of keeping it as is, I'm going to do that. I
need to press on to getting octave packaged (the goal of the whole excercise).

PS
Checked /opt on my debian box. Only occupied by a "foreign" package I
converted from .tar.bz2 to .deb. Have the impression that /opt is used mostly
for third-party binary apps, not built from source.
